Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) - Non-Surgical Treatment For Brain Tumors

10 Apr,20

Each year in India, around one million new cases of cancer are reported and majority of them are complex metastatic tumors that are inoperable due to their sensitive locations like tumors in brain, or spinal cord.

A brain tumor is a group of cancerous cells that grow inside or around the brain. These tumors can make thin tendrils that coil through surrounding tissues and are impossible to surgically remove without harming the patient.  In such cases, surgical extracting the tumor could critically damage encircling tissues and put a patient’s life at risk.

However, advances in medical techniques have made it possible to destroy targeted tumors that would earlier have been considered inoperable. Modern Radiotherapy has an integral role in the treatment of such complex cases of cancer and has the potential to cure or increase life span patients with less toxicity.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) utilizes multiple precisely focused radiation beams to destroy tumor cells in the brain and other parts of the body. The procedure utilizes a 3D imaging technique to deliver high doses of radiation to the targeted area and minimal impact on the surrounding healthy tissues. Like other forms of radiation, stereotactic radiosurgery works by destructing the DNA of cancerous cells. The affected cells then lose the ability to reproduce, which causes tumors to shrink.

The latest and most advanced technology for Stereotactic Radiosurgery is the Versa HD 6D Couch LINAC which enables precise treatment of brain tumors.

LINAC machines utilize X-rays to kill cancerous cells in the brain and other sensitive parts of the body. These machines can execute stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in a single session or three to five sessions in case of larger tumors, which is termed as fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy.

It produces many small beams of radiation on a tumor. These beams have very little effect on the healthy tissues it passes through, but when a focused dose of radiation is thrown to the affected site, all the beams intersect to destroy the tumor cells. The high dose of radiation delivered to the targeted area causes tumors to shrink. The accuracy of stereotactic radiosurgery ensures 100% destruction of cancer cells and minimizes damage to the healthy surrounding tissues.

In line with its philosophy to stay at par with the latest technological advancements in healthcare, Sarvodaya Hospital & Research centre has introduced Versa HD 6D Couch LINAC to effectively fight cancer.

Key features

  • Deliver the focused radiation dose with different high-end treatment techniques like SRS/SRT.
  • Provide targeted high dose of radiation in a short period of time to ensure patients have the safest, most comfortable treatment.
  • Deliver very accurate and high conformal radiation dose to the cancerous cells and at the same time can significantly limit normal tissue exposure and decrease patient’s side effects to minimum.

Sarvodaya Cancer institute delivers unmatched services in the field of radiation oncology for the overall well-being of patients and provides the best of treatment through the most advanced technological medium while ensuring affordability. We excel in treating most complex cases of cancer and take pride to be one of the best cancer centres in Northern India. Our goal is to take the fight against cancer to the next highest possible level and set new clinical benchmarks.
