Heartburn vs Indigestion - How can you tell the difference?

11 Feb,23

Heartburn and indigestion are some of the common gastroenterology issues. Heartburn is a type of indigestion where acid escapes into the oesophagus whereas indigestion is a condition which can occur due to various reasons. These are regarded as independent GI issues, despite the fact that they may occasionally happen together. How can you determine whether you have indigestion or heartburn if you have an upset stomach, acid regurgitation, or a burning chest?

Causes of heartburn and indigestion

Heartburn and indigestion have quite distinct origins because they are two different illnesses. However, some overlap does exist.

Heartburn

When your lower oesophageal sphincter is weak or loose, stomach acid can back up into your oesophagus, causing heartburn. It might also be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease, (GERD).

Risk factors: -

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Smoking during pregnancy
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke

There are certain food triggers for heartburn such as:-

  • Caffeine
  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Onion and garlic
  • Alcohol
  • Citrus fruits/juices
  • Peppermint
  • Tomatoes

Indigestion

The food items that cause heartburn, such as caffeine, spicy or acidic foods, and alcohol, can also cause indigestion. Eating huge meals or eating too quickly might also trigger indigestion.

There can be underlying causes of GI tract such as:-

  • Tumour in the stomach
  • Gall bladder diseases
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Bacterial infections
  • Gastroparesis
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Gastritis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Some people may experience regular stomach distress due to anxiety or sadness, which can result in indigestion problems. Studies have suggested that indigestion may have a genetic component involved.

Treatment of heartburn and indigestion

Over-the-counter medications can be used to treat both conditions such as: -

  • Antacids are used for moderate, infrequent heartburn symptoms by neutralizing gastric acid. It can be taken as soon as you encounter the symptoms or before the consumption of trigger foods to avoid it. It should not be taken every day unless advised by the doctor as it can upset the GI tract
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are used for chronic indigestion. They work by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach and allowing the oesophagus to heal
  • Histamine-H2-receptor antagonists are also advised for chronic conditions but they may not be as effective as PPIs

Consult with a Gastroenterology Specialist before taking any herbal medications for your GI issues.

Preventing heartburn and indigestion

Following are some of the ways through which you can prevent both conditions: -

  • Frequent meals with smaller portions - Slowly chew your food to promote digestion.
  • Fiber-rich food - Fiber absorbs fluids in the digestive tract to stop stomach acid from being displaced.
  • Digestive enzyme supplements – help in breaking down the food and hence reduce the chances of indigestion
  • Stop excess of antacids – it may lead to cardiac or kidney issues
  • Probiotics – have been found to be beneficial for GERD symptoms
  • Exercise and drink water – consumption of water before and after exercises will help wash digestive acids out of the oesophagus
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol – It can assist the lower oesophagal sphincter to function adequately
  • Eliminate fried and fatty foods from your diet – these are the triggers for heartburn and indigestion
  • Avoid eating a few hours before bedtime – you should also avoid laying down after a meal
  • Discourage the wearing of tight-fitting clothes – It will reduce the pressure around the lower oesophagal sphincter and abdomen
