For a long time, it was believed that many common skin problems had no relationship with diet. However, recent studies suggest that the diet we follow may have an impact on our skin. In some cases, it has been seen that dietary changes may influence the course of skin diseases such as acne and may prevent few conditions like skin aging. Our diet affects the health and aging of our skin.
Following are some common skin problems and their diet solutions:
Melasma (facial pigmentation)
It is a skin condition that usually occurs due to prolonged sun exposure and also common in pregnant women due to the fluctuating hormonal levels. It causes brown to grey patches on the forehead, cheeks and chin, upper lip, bridge of the nose. Melasma can also occur due to poor liver health and inadequate nutrition. Eating foods high in Iron and foliate like citrus fruits, nuts, green leafy vegetables are beneficial in managing Melasma. Also, antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E help repair sun damage to the skin that can cause Melasma.
Acne Rosacea
It is a condition that is characterized by redness of the face (erythema) along with a pustular lesion. Rosacea is more common in middle-aged women with fair skin. It is often mistaken for acne or other skin conditions. To treat this condition, one must avoid having dairy products and seek medical attention. Also avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods can help ease rosacea.
Hives (Urticaria)
It is an outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps or plaques on the skin. They are typically caused by food allergies and environmental irritants such as chemical additives found in food, soaps, and detergents. Urticaria is usually sensitive to salicylates which are also naturally found in foods such as apples, pineapples cherries, tomatoes, cucumber, oranges, and peanuts. Avoiding foods like milk products, wheat, and other grains that contain gluten, and foods that tend to cause intestinal gas, such as cabbage and beans or additives is critical for controlling the condition.
Eczema
It is a general term for an itchy red rash that initially weeps and oozes and may become crusted, thickened and scaly. Both eczema and dermatitis may be caused by food allergies, or few chemicals and drugs. A sugar-free diet and precautions taken for food allergies help in preventing such conditions.
