An Insight into Hematology & Hematological Disorders

27 Aug,20

Medical hematology focuses on the diagnosis & treatment of blood disorders and bone marrow disorders. This also includes treating a wide range of benign and malignant conditions of the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and the coagulation system. These conditions may occur in both adults and children. Hematological disorders denote the conditions that affect the blood cells or protein cells responsible for blood clotting. The diagnosis for hematological disorders generally starts from blood examination and may involve bone marrow examination too.

A hematologist diagnoses and treats blood and bone marrow disorders. Their treatment modality may include cancerous and non-cancerous disorders that affect the components of blood or blood-producing organs. At the Hematology clinic, the hematologist diagnoses & treat all blood-related disorders under one roof.

When are you referred to the Hematology clinic?

  • An increase or decrease in the blood components leads to various symptoms, which may require prompt attention. For example, a decrease in the red blood cell count and hemoglobin leads to symptoms of anaemia including fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. On the other hand, an increase in red blood cells causes thickening of the blood that leads to headaches and a reddish complexion.
  • A decrease in the white blood cell count or immune system proteins causes recurrent fever and infections. On the other hand, an increase in the immune system protein counts causes the thickening of the blood.
  • A decrease in the platelet count or blood clotting factors causes abnormal bleeding and bruising. Increased platelets or blood clotting factors cause inappropriate and excessive blood clotting or thrombosis.

Being referred to a hematology clinic, does not always mean Cancer!

People have a mindset that getting referred to a hematological clinic indicates cancer. Well, that’s not right all the time. If you have a blood disorder (which is not cancer all the time) and requires specialized treatment such as a bone marrow transplant, you are referred to a hematologist. Specialized care helps to get cured faster and in a better way.
